Sulfolane (CAS 126-33-0), also known as tetrahydrothiophene-1,1 - dioxide, chemical formula C4H8O2S, is a colorless transparent liquid. It is an excellent aprotic polar solvent, which is mutually soluble with water, acetone, toluene, etc. It is also an ideal solvent for aromatics extraction in petrochemical industry. Sulfolane is easy to decompose at high temperature. Below 220 ℃, the decomposition rate is relatively slow, but above 220 ℃, the decomposition rate rises sharply with the increase of temperature. Too high temperature will cause sulfolane to decompose into black polymer and sulfur dioxide. When there is air, due to the oxidation of air, the amount of sulfur dioxide released in the solvent system is more than when there is no air.

Application

It is an excellent solvent due to its high thermal stability and stability to acids and bases. It can be used to extract aromatic hydrocarbons from aliphatic hydrocarbons and remove acidic gases from gas mixtures. Sulfolane can be used as a solvent for polymer compounds such as polyacrylonitrile, acrylonitrile copolymer, polyfluoroethylene, etc., for spinning, film manufacturing, etc. It can also be used as plasticizer of cellulose ether, polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyamide, etc., and additive for acrylic fiber spinning. Others can also be used to separate fatty acids, extract non cellulose components from wood, etc. Because of its high boiling point, good thermal stability and non corrosivity, sulfolane can be used as a carrier for condensers. The properties such as corrosion resistance, flame resistance, thermal stability and viscosity can be improved by adding it to the press oil.
